With the variety of prosthetic suspension systems available, it may be hard to differentiate them all. Whether you’re an upper body or lower body amputee, you may have heard about self-suspended prosthesis, but what are they?

A self-suspended prosthesis utilizes a self-suspended socket (rather than valves, pumps, or straps) to keep a device in place.

Since our providers at Horizon Orthotic & Prosthetic Experience specialize in prosthetic design, we have expert knowledge on self-suspension systems. Read on to learn more about this unique type of system and how it works.

How does a self-suspended socket work?

A self-suspended socket works based on its shape. These sockets are designed with a brim that firmly attaches to the residual limb. The brim extends and narrows over a joint to grab hold of the area, therefore creating a snug and secure effect.

For example, the bone in your upper arm (the humerus) has two round knob-like bumps that protrude from the bone (epicondyles). A self-suspended socket will then extend past those knobby structures and tighten around the joint. As a result, the socket won’t come off easily whenever you move.

Is a self-suspended prosthesis right for me?

The best way to understand if the self-suspended system is right for you is by visiting your local prosthetist. He or she will examine your body and understand your goals to determine if this suspension method will benefit you. Other factors your prosthetist will consider include:

  • Length of the residual limb
  • Limb volume
  • Joint stability
  • Activity level
  • Cosmetic requirements
